Oxford United fan and PE teacher Phil Wilson knows students will be his harshest critics as the goalkeeper aim to help Merstham shock the League One side in FA Cup
Academy assistant principal is ready for the match he always dreamed of - but admits he almost quit playing in the summer

PHIL WILSON is happy to keep chalking up the wins for Merstham.

Phil Wilson knows his display against Oxford will come under intense scrutiny from his students.

And when he’s not between the sticks for the Surrey club he is keeping the kids in order at Harris Academy Falconwood in Bexley.

Assistant principal Wilson knows his pupils will have keen eyes on the television when his Ryman Premier outfit face up against League One Oxford United on Saturday – even if their feedback might not always be complimentary.

He said: “I’m head of sixth form and I may have mentioned to my A-level PE class about the game.

“Some of them will definitely be watching. There’s been a few moments where bits have appeared on YouTube – not always good stuff – and when they get hold of it they certainly let me know about it.

“If I let a goal in there’s no way I’ll avoid getting stick.

“There was a goal on YouTube that was scored past me that got a lot of views and they still remind me about that lob quite often. They’ll take every opportunity to have a laugh at me.”

But despite the attentions of his harshest critics, Wilson can’t wait to get out on the pitch against the U’s – the club where he started his footballing career and that he grew up supporting.

He joined aged 11, the highlight being two first-team appearances in 2001 before spells at Stevenage in the Conference and Maidenhead, Sutton and Dulwich Hamlet.

Wilson, 34, said: “I can’t wait for the weekend, it’s going to be brilliant to play against the team I support and grew up playing for.

“It was my birthday when it was drawn. It was definitely the best present I got that day.

“Having my mum and dad there, it’s going to be special for them too, being supporters of the club.

Keeper Wilson admits he was not certain he would carry on playing this season but is now facing the FA Cup tie he always dreamed of.

“I wasn’t even sure I was going to play this season.

“To get this moment towards the end of your career makes it even more special.

“If it happens early you take it for granted that it’s perhaps something that comes around all the time. So to wait so long for it, I can’t wait now.”

Merstham train on Thursdays and play matches on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Wages at the club range from £25-250 per week.

The fourth qualifying round was the furthest the club had got in their history so they were record-breakers even before their 2-1 triumph over National League South big-spenders Ebbsfleet to set up this historic first-round clash at their modest Moatside home.

Tune into BT Sport 1 from 12.30pm on Saturday to witness Phil's FA Cup 1st Round debut!

Other ex-Dulwich Hamlet players potentially involved for Merstham are: Xavier Vidal, Kershaney Samuels, Michael Abnett, Tommy Kavanagh, Calum Willock, Kris Campbell, Marc-Anthony Okoye and probably one or two others we've missed because we've done this in a hurry.

Phil invited us into his home in January 2015 for an extended interview - listen here.

  2. Don't suck up - A savvy leader will see sucking up as insincere. In addition, other team members will resent you if you are viewed as a brown-noser in it for personal gain.
